Data protection
This section is intended to pre-empt some questions and reassure visitors about this site by listing the eight basic principles of data protection as proposed by the Data Protection Registrar (DPR) and outlines the approach adopted by The Newport District Scout Council.
There are laws in place that provide data protection in the United Kingdom and they are available for public viewing in great detail from http://www.informationcommissioner.gov.uk/
The Data Protection Act 1998 came into force on 1 March 2000. It sets rules for processing personal information and applies to paper records as well as those held on computers. The 8 rules are that information gathered must be:
   fairly and lawfully processed;
   processed for limited purposes;
   adequate, relevant and not excessive;
   accurate;
   not kept longer than necessary;
   processed in accordance with the data subject’s rights;
   secure;
   not transferred to countries without adequate protection.
It is Newport District Scout Councils commitment to adhere to the above rules as far as it is practically possible.
There are a number of exemptions to the need to register with the Data Protection Registrar and Newport District Scout Council is currently seeking clarification on a claimed exemption as being a “not for profit organisation”.
